Fossils, Bugs, and Volcanoes Oh My

Our big outing for the weekend was visiting the Science Center. Lots of learning and fun!

The Megladon tooth and the fossil dig were big hits. This link has a really cool video that uses CGI to show the massive size of a Megladon. My little superhero watched it over and over when we got home. We spent our Sunday researching sharks on the internet. He will never go in the water again! Have an awesome week.

Pumpkin Patch

Every year in October, I long for a real pumpkin farm to take my little superhero. I remember visiting Martha's Vineyard years ago in the fall. We took a hayride out to a large field to pick our own pumpkins.

This past weekend, we made the best of what our area of the country has to offer and still had a great time. The air was not as crisp and the leaves were still green, but we did manage to find the perfect pumpkin to carve this year.

In my search for a pumpkin patch in our area, I came across the beautiful photos posted below that remind me of the pumpkin patch I visited in Martha's Vineyard.

AAAHHHH Weekend AAAHHHH Fall

I came across this fun video doing a little web surfing this week. I love seeing all of the fashion over the years and the music and dancing really get you in the mood for the weekend!

We are planning on enjoying the beautiful fall weather by taking a trip to Stanley Pond Farm to enjoy a hayride and pumpkin patch. I hope to find just the right pumpkins to make these adorable owls to add to my fall decorations.

And it just would not feel like a fall weekend without a little crafting and baking. I want to try making this black paper wreath and these yummy leaf shape ginger crisps. Wanting in on the action too, my little superhero is making these cute little bat o' lanterns.

Nothing gets me in the mood for spring than the quintessential white dress. As a teacher of fourth graders, I run into the occasional bully. Building a community where there is kindness and respect for each other and their differences is always at the top of my daily routine. This Taylor Swift song has been a perfect tool for showing my kids how to respond to being bullied as well as making the few bullies think twice before they try to bring someone down. So now it has become sort of our theme song and I have actually seen my students showing more respect and kindness to one another! I love it and I can't stop listening to it!!

Art Gala's For 4 Year Olds

An Art Gala for 4 year olds? It amazes me at what our kids are learning and exposed to at younger and younger ages! Some things are for the worse and some things are for the better! Like this past weekend, an example of the better, my son's school had an Art Gala complete with an auction, hors d'oeuvres, classical music, and beautiful wonderful artwork made by 4 year olds. The funds raised went toward each child's classroom. What a great idea! Dinner after the Gala- $75.00, my son's artwork- $20.00, the proud look on my son's face when we hung his artwork on our family room wall-priceless! Happy Monday!

A Look Back At 2010

In January, I started my very first blog. My very first post was a learning experience to say the least. It took me a while to think of a name for my blog, but I finally came up with something perfectly fitting for me. We shopped for antiques at the Renningers Antiques Extravaganza in Mount Dora, we celebrated National Chocolate Cake Day by making "Perfectly Chocolate" Chocolate Cake, and became addicted to old fashioned candy after a dinner out with my parents. We also had unseasonably cold temperatures for the Sunshine State so I wore my leather jacket with everything as I dreamt about summer.

In February, we tried out for Old Navy's Supermodelquin model search. We didn't win, but I have some cute pics to show for it of my little superhero. We also spent Valentine's Day weekend at the beach and my husband introduced me to the Gimlet.

In March, we celebrated my little superhero's 4th birthday in true superhero fashion.

In April, we celebrated Easter by baking and decorating cookies for my little superhero's teachers and took our annual trip to the happiest place on earth.

We started the month of May off by celebrating our 6 year wedding anniversary at our favorite restaurant and ended the month by kicking off the summer with a backyard pool party.

In June, I updated my living room with beach inspired finds.

In July, I did a lot of baking, like these cute little cupcakes and these pretzel sparklers.

We also spent some time at the beach, always a favorite in our house.

In August, I started a new position in a new school and had nothing to wear! My little superhero also started soccer for the first time. Our beach weekends quickly turned into soccer weekends.

In September, I finally got my new wood floors I have been dreaming about.

In October, my little superhero made halloween cupcakes all by himself!

In November, we spent Thanksgiving and a week long vacation in St. Augustine. We fought the crowds and got some great bargains on Black Friday.

In December, we enjoyed decorating for the season with our little superhero. He is such a big boy now that he helped us with the big tree and even decorated his very own little tree. We attended his Christmas Pageant and went to see the beautiful light displays in Mount Dora. We had a humongous meal at Maggianos on Christmas eve and enjoyed playing with all of the loot Santa brought our little one. Best of all, was time spent with family and friends.

It was a great 2010 and I know 2011 will be even better! Happy New Year to everyone and best wishes for lots of joy and happiness!

Here Comes Santa?

My toddler informed me yesterday that he would like to invite Santa over for Thanksgiving dinner. It went something like this, "Mom, does Santa eat turkey?" "Sure", I said without thinking as I read my latest issue of House Beautiful. "Can we invite him over for Turkey Day?" Looking up from my magazine, I knew I had to think quick. "Santa is very busy this time of year with reading and checking all of those lists and checking in on who is being naughty or nice", I tried to redirect him. My son thought for a moment and then asked me if I would make a video of him singing Here Comes Santa Claus and then send it to the North Pole. "Do you think he will come over if he sees my video?", he asked. "Let's try it", I said. Then I smiled for the rest of the day. Happy Turkey Day!

Little Lessons From A Starfish

I remember the days when you would just decorate a turkey with your child by coloring a picture of one, gluing on a few feathers, and maybe adding a set of googly eyes. I was a little stumped this past Friday when I picked up my little superhero from school. His assignment-"Disguise Tom Turkey so that he will not be noticed and cooked for Thanksgiving dinner". We had a choice of disguises including: a sheep, a cat (not sure about that one), an Indian, a pilgrim, or Superman. Of course, my daily life entails something superheroish each day. No surprise here which disguise my own little super guy would choose. I hope you won't mistake this Superman for Tom Turkey!!! This Thanksgiving I think we will have fish! Happy Monday!

Sweet Treats

My 4 year old made these yummy cupcakes all by himself! Granted they are out of a box, but I see Cupcake Wars in his future! (I love that show!) He did a great job and it has put me in the mood for a week of sweet treats! I highly recommend the Pillsbury Easy Frost. It is definitely perfect for little chefs to have some mess free fun. The Will To Win

Secretariat raced to win the Triple Crown and now will race into theaters on October 8th!

I had the opportunity to attend an early screening of this movie last night. It was a wonderful movie with a beautiful message.

Based on the true story of the 1973 Triple Crown Winner, a horse named Big Red became the winner of the coveted Triple Crown in 25 years. Raced under the name of Secretariat by his owner Penny Chenery, he not only won all three races, but still has the title as one of the greatest horses to have ever lived.

The will to win that is evident in both this amazing horse and his owner, reminds you that with a little perseverance and a will to win, you can do anything. If you love heartwarming stories, you will love this movie. If you get a chance to see it, let me know what you think!

A Fall Filled Weekend

Happy Weekend and Happy Fall! We will be spending the weekend decorating for the fall season. My husband teases me every year because I always start decorating for Halloween before October. Our neighborhood is very competitive. There is always a little competition to see who will get their decorations out first. This year, I have managed to wait at least until after the first day of fall, but I already have my decorations out, sorted, and ready to go. I want to try some new looks this year. Here are some options I love from Martha Stewart, Country Living Magazine, and I must purchase a few items pictured below from Pottery Barn. So Cute! I hope this year we can actually incorporate a fall gathering just for the grown ups-after the trick-or-treating, bobbing for apples, cupcake decorating, and Halloween games with the little ones of course!

Living in the South makes for a difficult transition from summer to fall, but every year I still make an attempt to pull out a few fall pieces-even if the mercury has not dipped below 80 degrees. This year is no different in the "I can't wait for cooler weather department!" I have been wanting to try the boyfriend plaid shirt trend (as mentioned HERE) since I saw it in my current Jcrew magazine I just got in the mail. Their version is paired with pencil skirts, but I though it looked just as good with a lacey A-line skirt that I was in the mood to dress down. I loved the look but it did not last long. About an hour into my day, I quickly changed into a tank top and pair of shorts! Fall can't get here soon enough!

Happy Monday!

To all of my followers, Thanks so much for sticking with me over the last month!

I have very much missed posting as much as I would like to on my blog and have especially missed reading many of my favorite blogs out there in the blogosphere!

My new adventure as a 4th grade teacher has been very rewarding. I have spent the last 18 years as a special educator, so this has been a bit of a learning curve for me. I have been putting in long hours and feel such a responsibility to give 110% to my students.

I am just now getting the hang of it and am actually finishing up my work day about an hour earlier than I have been. I think I even logged in a few less hours of grading papers and lesson planning this past weekend.

I am looking forward to enjoying many of my favorite past times again, including posting more throughout the week. Here are some random pics from the past few months.

This is how I have started every Friday for the last 4 weeks! It has been my little treat after a long week!

A picture of my son's awestruck expression by either Ken's plastic hair or Mrs. Potato Head's Hat from our Toy Story On Ice outing a few Fridays back. See the next 2 pics. My son made two comments when the show was over-"What was wrong with Ken's hair mommy?", and "I want a hat like Mrs. Potato Head!" This last comment did not make my husband very happy to say the least. Oh well, Ken's helmet head did not make me happy or Barbie for that matter! They broke up half way through the show. Really, I mean really couldn't Disney have done a better job in wardrobe?

OK, the next few pics are great. You see my son's very best friend has joined his soccer team. Unfortunately, not a lot of soccer is being played by either of them during the games. They are definitely playing, but not soccer. I though it was funny that my son's number is 6 and his best friend's number is 9.

See lots of laughing. The other children are at the other end of the field trying to make a goal!

Here again, my son playing everything but soccer! The bad thing about it is he is really good at soccer!

Here-just two peas in a pod-IN THE WRONG GOAL. They made their way to the teams goal right next to our field during the game. The coach is yelling at them to get back in the game! I made a quick escape to the bathroom very red faced.

Here again, attempting to fly appears to be more important than soccer! Oh well, this was the very first game and he did much better this past weekend! Let's hope it sticks!

A Map of the Heart

It has been a long and exhausting week at work and I have missed enjoying many of my favorite past times this week. An activity that my class started Friday reminded me of why I love teaching and spending those long hours at work on my students.

To help them have a list of ready to go topics to write about and to keep me from hearing, "I don't know what to write about." I had them create heart maps. A heart map, an idea from Ralph Fletcher's, How To Write Your Life Story, is a visual representation of a student's heart, displaying topics that "live" there; these topics are ones the student shows passion and interest towards when writing about them. The heart maps go on the inside cover of the student's writing journals. All throughout the school year, the students re-visit their heart maps to find a topic to write about when they are suffering from writers block.

Going through these student samples not only reminded me of my love for teaching, but about all of the other things that are important to me! My heart map would be filled with time spent with my son reading to him or watching him play soccer, spending time with all of the special people in my family, trips that we have taken and trips that lay ahead, hanging out on weekends doing nothing or beach days covered in sand and smelling of suntan lotion, favorite foods-which would have to include chocolate, and hopes and dreams to wish for.

So with a reminder to cherish what is important to you and to enjoy every second of every day, my weekend will be filled with love, laughter, and fun with the people I adore! What would be on your heart map? Happy Weekend!

A Soccer Weekend and Make Me Laugh Monday

Another weekend was spent centered around my little superhero. Click play for a peek at his very first soccer practice. He showed his athletic ability out on the field, but an hour of running and kicking in the hot sun proved to be very trying for him! When we got in the car to go home he informed me that he would not be playing soccer "ever, ever, ever again," because "it tired him out," but he would definitely be attending the end of the season cupcake party the coach told the children about. We had a talk about finishing what you start and after a few tears, one long tantrum, and a discussion about how his shin guards rubbed him the wrong way, he will be showing up for his first game in a few weeks! Railroad Tracks and Boots

The weekend was not much of a weekend for me as I spent most of it preparing for the new school year! I did manage to steal a few enjoyable hours outside, even though it was spent collecting rocks for an upcoming project my students will be working on. I remembered from a little day trip my family took over the summer, these railroad tracks flanked on either side with numerous rocks in various sizes. Even though the temperature was in the high 90s, I threw on these boots because I am a huge chicken about snakes and the grass leading up to the tracks is knee deep. I did not get much rest or relaxation but I was very prepared to inspire and challenge my kids on their first day of the new school year. I also remembered one of my favorite things about cold weather-getting to wear boots! I can't wait until winter!

My last weekend of my summer break proved to be a very relaxing one. The theme could be called Getting Back To Nature as we spent a lot of time outdoors including taking a nature walk and searching for seashells along the shore. Nothing To Wear

As the weekend is upon us, my summer break is coming to an end. I will be heading back to work on Monday. I have been going through my closet updating and preparing my work wardrobe most of the afternoon.

My husband does not understand why women need to try on outfit after outfit when planning what to wear to work or any other function that comes up. He thinks it is funny when I try on several different items of clothing before deciding on which one will end up making it out the door.

While I was in the midst of my self styling session trying to decide what I will be wearing on my first day back to work, (If I could only have Rachel Zoe for a day! SIGH!) my husband decided I needed a visual of what he calls "unnecessary stress", so he started snapping pictures of me. I have to admit, I probably could have stopped after the second outfit.

I think I have something ready for my first day back, but I have a feeling I will be spending most of my weekend shopping for some updates to my wardrobe! How many outfits do you try on before heading out the door for work or other functions? Any stylists out there? I welcome your tips and expertise!! Happy Weekend!!

I am always on the lookout for recipes that result in bite size portions. This tassie cups with lemon curd filling recipe from Paula Dean fit the bill. It is perfect for when you do not want the temptation of an entire pie enticing you every time you open the refrigerator. Each mouthwatering mini tart soaks your tastebuds with sweet citrusy goodness. I definitely can't eat just one, but at least it will be less than the serving from a whole pie that would have ended up on my plate! I know what will be on my breakfast menu in the morning!

What I Want Wednesday-Isabel Marant's Fall Collection

I recently came across this fashion designer, Isabel Marant, in my September edition of Lucky. I loved the one outfit that got a little snippet in the lower right corner of page 28. (if you happen to get the magazine)

I wanted to know a little more about her and after some Internet surfing, I fell in love with her entire fall collection. It has the Parisian Chic look that she is known for, but I love the 1950's vibe her pieces have for fall.

I love the skinny capris, pointy toe flats and pumps, scarfs, and tops. It reminded me of the Pink Ladies from the movie Grease, without all of the pink. The models even wore their hair in high pony tails, but the style was very modern with the longer swingy earrings!

Weekend Bits and Make Me Laugh Monday

Our weekend turned out to be a very rainy one. We spent the entire time indoors. After many movies and several games on the Wii, we looked for some alternative indoor fun. I came across a very entertaining site online called JibJab where you can upload a picture of your self into some very funny videos! This proved to be very entertaining for a rainy Saturday. You can send ecards, make videos to send out just for laughs, or use for other celebrations and general merrymaking! See the second video below as part of my Make Me Laugh Monday! It is sure to get an out loud chuckle from you! I promise it will not disappoint!

We also spent some time trying to help my son decide which sport he would like to play this fall. He can't decide between soccer, flag football, or t-ball. Sunday morning he actually told me when he woke up that he had a dream about socks and balls. Go figure? He is only 4! Of course, I had to make a video to show him what his dream possibly looked like. When you are stuck indoors for 48 hours, you get a little wacky!! Hope you enjoy! Happy Monday.

There's No Place Like Home

My favorite pair of shoes walked out right from under me a few months ago! I am so glad they found their way back home!

I was recently elated, when I was cleaning out my garage and came across a pair of red shoes that I thought were lost, never to be found again. I purchased them about a year ago at a consignment shop that I actually consign with.

I saw them and immediately fell in love! My first thought was of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz as I tried them on. I had a little banter going on in my head that went something like this- "There is no place like home." "There is no place like home." "And your new home will be on my feet!"

Every time I put them on, I secretly clicked my heels together three times before walking out the door! I found them stashed in a bin of shoes ready for my next trip to the consignment shop. I am still not sure how they got there, but I am delirious that I found them! Of course, I had to wear them the very next day and thought they would be a perfect complement to this black and white floral skirt.

I featured them in their own little photo shoot and video just in case they get lost again! There really is no place like home!! I would love to hear what would get their own feature from your closet!!

Make Me Laugh Monday and a Video of a Stuffed Woobie

Happy Monday! So as usual I was surrounded by Superheroes and Disney Movies this weekend! You know, it's just life with a 4 year old!

Friday included our 13th viewing of BOLT. (which inspired our video below) On Saturday, Spiderman, Buzz Lightyear, and Mr. Incredible made an appearance when I went to pull out my wallet to pay for our ice cream.

They just tumbled right out scattering about the floor along with my Bobbi Brown Gloss in Dusty Rose and my Spanx power panties (OK, that's an entire post in itself -soon to be posted!)

The look on the young guy's face taking my money was priceless! I just looked at him and said, "There pretty powerful! Embarrassed and red faced, I hurried off wishing they had the power to erase his memory so I could continue to come buy my favorite milkshake. As soon as we got home, I searched the internet for a new ice cream shop!

Finally, after our little superhero was off to dreamland, my husband and I got crazy with the digital camera and some video editing software! OK, I know what your thinking-stop it!!!!! My Weekend in 14 Magazine Titles

I spent the day cleaning up my house to get ready for the weekend. As I was picking up the 30 or so magazines off of the nightstand, I realized that I might have an addiction! This does not even include the other 5 locations in my home where many other magazines take up residence.

I got my usual email this morning that I get every few weeks from Jcrew. It is like music to my ears, Picasso to my eyes, and chocolate to my mouth when I see those 8 little words-extra 30% off final sale plus free shipping.

Would you rather be a HOT MESS or Best Dressed?

I have realized lately that I very much enjoy reading or watching about befores and afters, fashion do's and fashion don'ts, or best dressed lists and worst dressed lists.

I love Glamour Magazine's Dos and Don'ts. I love any of the home dec shows that show the before and after rooms. I love award season shows where the best dressed and worst dressed lists are created.

I recently came across this fun little site that features a Las Vegas Live Street Cam. It is embarrassingly addicting as you watch live feeds of people walking on the street. During my viewing sessions, I have come across a few people that one might consider a HOT MESS and need an immediate intervention from Staci London, the host of What Not To Wear.

I love the way she can take a HOT MESS of a person and turn he or she into a style maven worthy of spot on any Best Dressed List in Hollywood. I thought it might be fun to try my hand at this. So I Googled HOT MESS to see what I came up with and unfortunately I can't share what I saw!!

So I kept at it and came up with quite a few pics of some special ladies and celebrities that could be considered one HOT MESS! Now don't get me wrong, I could be considered a HOT MESS at times as well, but only in the privacy of my own home!!!!!

There is always a way to style up your look and rock it out no matter what type of clothing you enjoy wearing! So just like the first example in this post, I have added a few more pictures to show you how to go from one HOT MESS to Best Dressed with a few simple changes.

For this HOT MESS, I kept the shorts and top idea, but changed out the huge, very outdated tropical pattern to a solid classic style shirt. I changed out the (always makes you look bigger) white shorts for a light tan color.

For this one HOT MESS, really...do I even need to give an explanation?

Now I love Courtny Love and I have seen her in magazines looking quite beautiful! Unfortunately, I have seen her looking like one HOT MESS more often! She is such a pretty girl and I think the look on the right still has a little funkiness too it, but would keep her on the Best Dressed List.

For this one HOT MESS, oh Brittany, Brittany, Brittany. Her look here is not that bad, but she would look so polished with the very similar look on the right!

This just confuses me???? Leighten Meester, plays the very posh, stylish, and conservative Blair on Gossip Girls so maybe she just has to try the other extreme when off camera, but really? I mean really! This is beyond a HOT MESS!

My last little HOT MESS is Betty, from Ugly Betty . I know, I know it is for her character, but wouldn't the look on the right look so much cuter?

OK, by now you are probably thinking that I have grown crazily addicted to the term HOT MESS, but actually I am participating in a fun little word game called Word Up, YO! Each week, readers are given a word and they must use it in context in one of their posts as many times as they can!

This weeks word (also referred to as WOW for Word of Week) is HOT MESS. It was a lot of fun to write this post, but now I am referring to everything in our household as a HOT MESS! It is driving my husband crazy and next weeks word can't get here soon enough.

Happy Monday! Here is a peek of our weekend filled with the park, a walk on the river, pizza, and lots of hugs and kisses from my little superhero! I hope your weekend was spent doing something fun with someone you love!

Along with the usual bits of my weekend, I thought it would be fun to start a new weekly feature to get you through the Monday Blues by keeping you in side-splitting laughter. All you have to do is get ready to laugh and share something that will keep our frowns upside down!!!

Change Is Good!

As you can see (for those of you who have been here before) I have made some changes to my blog. If this is your first time here, your in for a treat-keep reading!

I have spent my day beautifying my little nest in blogosphere! I recently came across this absolutely awesome blog that is written and put together by a very creative and giving mommy of 3. I have not personally met Megan, but if I ever do, I would give her a big hug and a big thank you for making it so easy to add your own personal touch to your blog.

She is the creative genius behind shabbyblogs.com and everything is free! She makes it very easy for anyone to add that little something extra to your place in cyberspace. Her blog includes tutorials and videos to help you along the way and there is a large selection of backgrounds, headers, buttons, and much more, all yours for the taking!

It's girly and pretty with a shabby chic style. It would make Rachel Ashwell proud!! She gives each background fun names like "Southern Girl" and "Ridiculously Fabulous". She is continuously coming up with new things to give away, as well as tips for working with blog templates.

This blog has taken up residence at the top of my favorites list! If you like that shabby chic style, this site is definitely for you and even if it is not your cup of tea, you would definitely learn a lot by checking it out! What I WantWednesday-Z Gallerie's Interior Designer

My "What I Want Wednesday" this week is the interior designer who set up the floor displays at Z Gallerie! I was window shopping at our local designer mall recently and this black and white striped cabana took up residence in my peripheral vision.

I made an immediate dash toward the entrance- (sorry to the lady whose pant cuff ripped when my heel caught it just right which led to a few more unfortunate events and sorry about the large bruise you probably have by now on your derriere!) Following a few apologies, I stood awe struck in front of this lovely creation!

After a few "mind movies" that included me in my backyard entertaining and dinner partying it up under my beautiful black and white striped cabana, sitting on my chic white sofas, and explaining to my guests that my designer assured me that the large candle holders definitely added the wow factor, I snapped back to reality when the man next to me asked me if I was alright.

Knowing I had better move along before I hear "SECURITY" over the mall intercom, I made my way throughout the rest of the store pondering how hard it might be to just move in right here. You know, hide under one of the beds or something until closing and then have some dinner at one of the beautiful table settings, curl up on one of the fluffy couches to read a book, and sleep soundly in the plush bedding that adorn the chic beds.

OK, all kidding aside, I had to eventually get out of there before I was arrested for loitering. So I snapped a few pics with the thought that maybe I could at least turn them into some artwork for my walls! Sigh!

Some of my favorites from Z Gallerie include: the Concerto Bed, these chic combos, and I love this Boot Umbrella Stand. Check out the Website, it is filled with chic furniture and beautiful accessories! Just be careful, you may start hearing your own little "mind movies"! And if you hear "SECURITY" make a run for it, just try to dodge anyone with cuffed pants!

Vintage Brooch Ribbon Necklace

I have been collecting vintage brooches from flea markets and antique stores for the past year. I was excited when I came across this little crafty project for brooch ribbon necklaces recently and finally tried it out! I was pleasantly surprised with how they turned out and find it to be a creative way to reuse or recycle something in a new way! It is even more special if the brooches or earrings were handed down from someone special! Either way, it makes a pretty accessory to your favorite blouse and adds a little wow factor to any outfit! The best part is when someone asks you where you got it, you can demurely say, "I made it!" Happy Jewelry Making!

Supplies-Wire Cutters, Needle Nose Pliers, Tweezers,

Silk Ribbon-1 1/2 " wide cut into 4 (24" strips), Sandpaper,

Clear Nail Polish, Glue Gun, Copper Spray Paint, Jump Rings,

Paper Towels

With your wire cutters, snap off backings to your jewelry, using the sandpaper sand down any rough edges, use clear nail polish on any sharp edge remaining.

Spray each piece with copper spray paint and wipe off with a paper towel immediately. This gives the jewelry a vintage shabby look, like it has discolored over time.

Arrange your pieces to your liking. I used 5 brooches and 4 pairs of earrings.

Add your jump rings using the needle nose pliers to connect the pieces together and finish off with your ribbon.

Tie around your neck and admire your jewelry making chops!!
